Introduction
This project was part of an Educational Research Funding Programme (ERFP) Tier 2 grant by the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
The project titled, “Cultivating Cosmopolitan Virtues through Critical, Aesthetic and Ethical Engagements with Literature” that took place over 3 years from 2018 to 2020. It encompassed three key phases
Phase 1: Survey
1.
The purpose of the first phase is to provide a contextual understanding of Literature teachers’ pedagogical practices (specifically text choice, questions asked, values and instructional strategies) and the beliefs informing these.
2.
A National Survey on Literature Teachers Beliefs and Practices was constructed, pilot tested and validated.
3.
232 Literature teachers from 41 secondary schools in Singapore participated in the survey between 2018 and 2019.
Phases 2 & 3: Case Study
1.
The purpose is to understand how teachers connect Literature to cosmopolitan (citizen of the world) dispositions and values. In particular, the project explored literature's role in cultivating empathetic and global thinkers for the 21st century.
2.
The second phase involved the formation of the 21CC Literature Research Interest Group encompassing 11 Literature from 10 secondary schools in Singapore. The research team observed current practices of these teachers in 2019.
3.
The third phase involved our team working with the teachers from the 21CC Literature Research Interest Group to design 3 unit plans: i) Exploring Asia through Poetry, ii) Applying Ensemble Drama Pedagogy in Teaching Literature, and iii) Exploring Race and Identity through Singapore Poetry.
